Pipeline cleaning by means of spherical or cylindrical Foam pigs (pipeline cleaners) is a convenient and effective way of pipe cleaning without interrupting the flow. The pipe pig is introduced into the pipeline via a trap, which is equipped with a pig launcher and receiver. The product flow forces the pig through the pipeline; alternatively, it can be towed by a cable or another device.

Pipe pigs facilitate Industrial pipeline cleaning by scraping clean the inside pipe walls and pushing out debris in the pipes. In addition to Industrial pipeline cleaning, the pipe pig can also inspect the interior of the line.

Every pipeline is unique, and pipeline cleaning needs may vary according to its use and lifecycle stage. With more than 6 decades of experience, Pipepigs offers a wide range of Pipeline Cleaning Services.

General Method Of Pipeline Cleaning

Pipe Pigs can provide you with guidelines specific to your type of pipeline. However, this general method applies to most types of pipelines.

  1. Locate and operate all in-line and lateral valves to be used during pigging pipeline.
  2. Arrange valving to isolate the line to be cleaned.
  3. Open operational valve to determine residual pressure, flow rate and direction of flow.
  4. Launch line size swab to prove direction of flow and integrity of pipeline.
  5. Apply a series of individual pigs in varying diameters and/or densities as required to attain proper cleanliness of pipeline.
  6. Check progress of operation by periodically running line size swabs during cleaning.
  7. Flush pipeline, laterals and services properly after cleaning operation is completed.

Speak to Pipe Pigs today about your specific requirements. We will be happy to assist with information and recommendations on the right pipeline cleaning equipment for your needs.

When to Clean?

Pipe cleaning needs for a pipeline vary greatly depending on its life cycle stage. Among the stages are:

  • Pre-Commission Cleaning: The following construction and prior to pipeline commissioning
  • While pipelines are being commissioned (dewatering, drying, and conditioning)
  • Operational Cleaning
  • The adoption of a new service or the installation of a new component
  • Cleaning prior to the Cessation of Production (COP)
  • Decommissioning cleaning prior to abandonment, recycling, and/or recovery

A line may accumulate debris during any of these stages, which if not removed may affect both the efficiency of the line as well as the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors. Contaminants include wax, scale, corrosion products, hydrates, emulsions, produced sands, and even water. Thus, it is advisable to clean pipelines often and regularly. Maintaining pipeline systems consistently can significantly increase efficiency and operational life.

F.A.Q's

Pipeline cleaning is necessary to maintain optimal flow rates, prevent blockages, and minimize the risk of corrosion and failures. It ensures the smooth operation of various industries relying on pipelines.

The frequency of pipeline cleaning depends on factors such as the type of fluid being transported, pipeline length, and the presence of contaminants. Regular inspections and assessments can determine the appropriate cleaning schedule.

Yes, some pipeline cleaning methods utilize environmentally friendly techniques such as the use of biodegradable cleaning agents and water recycling systems.

Yes, some advanced pigging techniques, such as intelligent pigging, can detect defects like cracks, corrosion, or abnormalities in the pipeline's internal structure.

The risks associated with pipeline cleaning include potential exposure to hazardous substances, equipment malfunction, or damage to the pipeline if not performed correctly. Hiring professional services minimizes these risks through their expertise and adherence to safety protocols.
